Maddie and Owen (Added 23rd August 2010)

Filed under portraits Tags: — • Written by Simon @ 17:21

Maddie and Owen are gorgeous! They’re also really great fun so I was chuffed to bits when Zoe and Steve called and asked if I could take some photographs for the walls of their new house.

Sometimes I’ll use studio lights for these kinds of photographs but not this time. Each of these was shot using the natural light coming in the window of the spare bedroom at their house. This meant that Maddie and Owen were completely relaxed in their own surroundings so it was easy for them both to appear perfectly natural.

It was also funny to get some great expressions from Maddie in the last two photographs. She does her ‘cheeky little monkey’ look very well. I think she gets it from her mother… :-)

Jenny & Mike’s Wedding in Selby Abbey (Added 15th August 2010)

I’ve come to know Jenny and Mike really quite well since they asked me last year to photograph their wedding so it was a real privilege to capture their special day at Selby Abbey and York Racecourse. Jenny and her four bridesmaids (Vicky, Cath, Dobrina and Taliah) looked amazing having their hair styled at the Tranquil Hair Salon, and once they’d all got changed at the hotel the bright red colour of the day made them all look just incredible.

The rain held off as we all headed to Selby Abbey (such a beautiful building!) and a rather proud looking Richard (Father of the Bride – FOB) took Jenny into the abbey, stopping for some quick photographs on the way in.

The service was fantastic and I managed to get permission to sneak up some rather dangerous looking stairs (don’t tell my insurance company!) to gain some photographs looking right down the abbey from a great height.

It was a long day as I had to drive back down to Hampshire that evening to photograph another wedding in Surrey the next morning, but it was such good fun and we all enjoyed it immensely.

I hope you enjoy looking at these ’sneak peeks’. Jenny and Mike will return from honeymoon soon and at that point all the other photographs will be available for everyone to view.

Sarah and Alanna in London – a city-workshop (Added 28th July 2010)

Last Friday I spent a few hours in London with a good friend, Alanna (see bottom photograph), who needed some extra training in how to use her camera better. Alanna is excellent at ’seeing’ in her head the photograph she’s trying to capture but just needed a little help understanding how her camera can be used to achieve some of these images. I have every confidence she’ll go far in the world of photography!

Meanwhile, Sarah was our willing model for the day and she did very well at a) modelling, b) staying relaxed, and c) being patient with Alanna and I all day!!

The photographs below are some of the ones we captured from the day. We started in Westbourne Park near Paddington (thanks to Kim from IMMI for this recommendation) before moving on to Camdem Lock (the brick wall and the b&w bridge shots below), Trafalgar Square (the obligatory telephone box) and then over Westminster Bridge.

We even bumped into the police (last photograph – eek!) but thankfully they were on our side!

I hope you like the images below – we had a fun time!

Helen & Aaron’s ‘hot’ wedding! (Added 12th July 2010)

When I first met Helen and Aaron, I knew their wedding at Royal Garrison Church in Aldershot and Old Thorns Golf Club in Liphook was going to be great fun. And I’m glad to say I wasn’t mistaken! With a highly impressive Guard of Honour (part of which had travelled a great distance) and friends & family from far and wide, it was a day to remember.

But wasn’t the weather hot!? In fact, Aaron and Helen’s wedding was the hottest of the year so far, and I think it’ll be hard to beat it! And while most of us found the sun just-about-bearable I take my hat off to Aaron and Sam (the best man) with the Guard of Honour in full uniform with thick red tunics in the summer heat.

On to Old Thorns Golf Club in Liphook, Hampshire, and it gave everyone an opportunity to enjoy a glass of champagne and catch a bit of shade before sitting down to enjoy the wedding breakfast. But not before five emotional speeches from both fathers, bride, groom and best man.

Sneak peeks below – can’t wait to process all the photographs from the day!

Mark & Emma with Evie & Max on a sunny afternoon (Added 4th June 2010)

Filed under Monk Sherborne, portraits Tags: — • Written by Simon @ 07:51

A family portrait shoot in the sunny Hampshire village of Monk Sherborne (near Basingstoke) was perhaps the best way to spend an afternoon last weekend. And the weather was perfect for the occasion. In fact, it was so good that we were all in need of ice-cold drinks by the time we returned!

We decided that for the family photography session we should all walk to the local park and let the children be children. No harsh studio lights, no fake smiles, just natural beauty at its best.

Evie is just at that age when she wants to look good in front of the camera (but she’s not at the age when they run away from it!) and Max is at the wonderfully inquisitive stage of his life when everything is there to be poked, prodded or stared at. Cameras included.

Below is a small sample from the afternoon. Hope you like them!

Les and Kath’s Wedding Anniversary (Added 11th May 2010)

Filed under Events, Friends Tags: — • Written by Simon @ 12:40

So, it may have been a little on the chilly side, but at least the rain held off! Les and Kath, now in their 70th year of married life together were both on good form and very pleased to see so many people from the family meeting up at Lauraine’s house last Sunday afternoon. The hog roast had been cooking in the back garden since 7.00 that morning and by the time we got to lunch it was full of the flavours you’d expect (if a little off-putting with its eyes still appearing to look at you!)

With good food, fine wine and excellent company came a speech from Philip to encourage everyone to raise a glass to celebrate the previous 69 years of marriage. Not that people needed encouraging, of course!

And then a response speech from Les which I don’t think I’ll ever forget. Packed with meaning, humour and emotion, he spoke with such clarity and thoughtfulness and touched the hearts of everyone there.

I hope I’m as happy as Kath and Les are when I’ve been married 69 years. Tomorrow, Karen and I celebrate our ninth wedding anniversary. Far fewer years but just as happy!

The photographs below are a small summary of the day. If you’d like a complete of them please email simon@bonjourphotography.com and I’ll arrange for that to happen.

Hope you enjoy them!

‘Sneak Peeks’ from Sam and Jacqui’s Wedding!! (Added 3rd May 2010)

Filed under Bristol, Wedding Tags: — • Written by Simon @ 23:41

What an incredible wedding for Sam and Jacqui at Redland Parish Church in Bristol! Firstly, the weather was supposed to be rain all day but it managed to hold off until everyone was sat down enjoying the wedding breakfast. But secondly, I think this was the most moving wedding I’ve ever had the opportunity to photograph.

It’s obvious that Sam and Jacqui are so deeply in love with each other and their whole wedding day was filled with all things love. Love for each other, love for their families, love for friends and love for God.

After a cut-throat shave for the Gents at the 1930s style Patrizio, and a two hour pampering session for the Ladies with the amazing Doug at Hobbs Salon, it was on to a healthy full-english breakfast at the Cafe Cosmopolitan on Whiteladies Road. There’s something great about a bride sporting incredible hair with a fabulous veil while she’s tucking into bacon and eggs wearing jeans and a casual top!

Back at the house, it was time for the dress and then a brief walk down to Redland Parish Church with a set of Converse All-Stars for footwear. I’m sure that Jacqui will remember that walk with her Dad and those few precious minutes before the wedding service for the rest of her life…

With a fantastic band leading the worship (Be Thou My Vision, Awesome God and Before the Throne of God Above) the wedding itself was just electric! Sam and Jacqui’s faces were beaming throughout which was a great sight to photograph! And so many people were involved to share the experience (which included Readings in both English and Cantonese!)

After ensuring the ‘formals’ were covered off swiftly, it was on to the Reception to enjoy a glass of ‘bubbly’, fine canopés good conversation. But I don’t think anyone was prepared for the emotional speeches which left barely a dry eye in the room. Just incredible.

I can’t wait to show Sam and Jacqui all the photographs from the day but below is a small collection of ‘Sneak Peeks’ to summarise the day for those people who couldn’t be there. I’m really looking forward to designing the album for these photographs! Hope you enjoy them.

Family-tree party in central London (added 26th April)

Filed under Birthday Party, Events Tags: — • Written by Simon @ 22:49

The weather was great, the food was excellent and only one person was unable to make the family party due to Volcanic ash. Wendy and Hilary organised a superb family gathering at the Imperial Hotel, London, and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves, which I hope you can see from the photographs.

The party was organised with the intention of bringing together all members of the family from all over the world. I think it also coincided with a family member’s 120th birthday (not that he was there, of course!) but I was too busy taking photographs to get involved in piecing together the family tree, much as I wanted to!

Parties like this provide a great opportunity for taking photographs. Everyone is having a good time and children are naturally relaxed. But the setting was even better as the weather enabled everyone to spill outside into the park over the road.

Once outside we managed to grab some group shots (perfect for historical records!) and then some very informal shots of everyone enjoying themselves. All the children were running in and out of the fountain in the middle of the park which was great fun!

Sneak peeks below…

Reviewing the new iPad (with a hands-on evaluation slightly ahead of schedule!) – 17th April

Filed under iPad, iPhone • Written by Simon @ 23:06

video

While many people love almost all things Apple, there’s a good number of people saying, “Why would I need an iPad? It’s too large, it hasn’t got a camera, it doesn’t have Flash, it’s just a large iPhone without the phone…”.

And if you’re a feature-driven person then iPad is not for you. But the iPad isn’t designed for everyone, and neither is it designed to replace the phone, or the laptop, or the desktop, or even the netbook. I see iPad sitting perfectly in between all other devices and ultimately being used far more than each.

In a typical house, I believe the iPad will ‘live’ in the kitchen. Mum wants to go shopping on the Next Directory website, Dad wants to check the route to his meeting in Cheltenham tomorrow, Janey wants to catch up with her Facebook friends and Little Billy wants to watch the trailer for Astro Boy. Each person can do this one after the other on a device which is going to be so ‘usable’ it’ll free up most other devices in the home.

Like it or loathe it, Apple have taken the Slate concept and made it a) work properly, and b) desirable for many.

On 14th April, Apple announced it would delay worldwide shipping of the highly-anticipated iPad until the end of May. That’s six loooong weeks. But hey, 24 hours later I managed to get my hands on one and have spent the evening putting it through its paces. And here’s the question:

Is the iPad as good as many people expect it to be?

I’m not going to answer that immediately. Instead, I’m going to take you on a journey of the Apple User Experience to give you some honest thoughts on whether iPad is here to stay or a white elephant…

Right from the go, Apple excels at Marketing. Even the iPad box is classic ‘Apple’ with a clean, white finish and ’spot UV’ on the logos. The iPad itself sits neatly inside, begging to be switched on but wincing at the thought of the first fingerprint to land on it! Surprisingly, it’s much heavier than I thought it was going to be and (this is slightly negative now) I can imagine you’d get tired of holding it throughout a whole movie.

Switching it on and activating requires the standard registering through iTunes so be prepared to wait if you buy yours from somewhere far from home; you may have a long journey of looking at the thing without using it!

Once registered, I instantly noticed how much quicker it is than the iPhone 3GS despite having never thought the iPhone was slow. A lot of people find this; maybe we expect the iPad to be slow due to its larger size, but it’s a good surprise! The icons seem strangely spaced apart but they move around the screen in exactly the same way as the iPhone.

Of course, as the 3G iPad hasn’t been released (yet) its internet connection is wholly dependent on a good wifi signal; no problem if you’re at home, but you’re snookered with this version if you want to collect email on the train.

Watching movies though? Now that’s another matter. In fact, with this 1024×768 screen you’ll have no desire to collect emails as you’ll be completely immersed into movie-world without a care for communication! Only problem at the moment is that my movie ripping software (legitimate, I add!) has everything sized for an iPhone so it’s a little pixelated until I find the time to re-rip at the larger size.

Photographs. This was an area I couldn’t wait to try, especially having heard the UE (user experience) was so ‘Apple’. And I’ve gotta say it, I think this is just *amazing*! Like the iPhone, you have albums of photographs but on the iPad they’re visually laid out in piles of images, each ready to be explored.

A single tap ‘explodes’ that album across the whole screen to then allow flicking through them all one at a time in glorious full-screen. And I can’t tell you how great the display is to view them all! Clear and crisp with punchy colours and a perfect transition from one image to the next. A small ‘pinch’ reduces the scattered images back to a pile to join the others. Just perfect!

Watch this space for imminent details of iPads becoming an optional extra with our Bonjour wedding and portrait albums…

Negative comment alert: iPad is not happy without a case… Sure, you’ll not need one when you’re using it (and I’d highly recommend ignoring the protective screens which are about to hit eBay in their thousands) but transporting this thing with no case would be a recipe for disaster. Right now I’m scared to let this anywhere near any keys, coins and definitely children.

Apps. Some work well but some are badly configured for iPad. Most of them are simply the same size as on the iPhone and sit rather isolated in the middle of the large screen. I can see this changing over the next few weeks as developers make necessary adjustments to turn small-screen apps into iPad-ready versions.

A good example of an iPad-ready app is the excellent IMDB which detects what device it’s running on (iPad, iPhone, Touch etc.) and remains full screen without simply making everything LARGE!

Maps in large screen are excellent. Oh, and they rotate (unlike iPhone). The calendar and email apps are perfectly configured for iPad and easier to use than an iPhone, and the keyboard just flies! I can type almost as fast on this as I can on a standard plastic keyboard.

My overall summary:
If you don’t think iPad is for you then I should slide back to your Windows PC and keep the money in your pocket. It’s not going to be for everyone, and neither is it trying to. But if you really appreciate excellent UE and you see the potential for a well-used device then I should put your name on the pre-order list for end May.

However, don’t forget it’s just the wifi-only version at the moment so I would probably recommend waiting until the 3G model comes out and then signing up to a Voda, O2 or Orange dataplan.

Either way, it’d be good to know what you think!

New promo videos! (added 11th April)

Filed under Wedding, portraits, promotion • Written by Simon @ 17:08

video

I’m really excited to share with you two new videos I’ve had produced for Bonjour Photography!  Both videos were produced by Paul Wilkinson in Queensland, Australia, and they reflect the shooting style of Bonjour perfectly.

The first video focuses on weddings and shows some examples of recent work.  The weddings in this video include venues such as the Forbury Hotel in Reading, the Elvetham Hotel in Hartley Wintney, and the Lythe Hill Hotel in Haslemere.

The second video is all about portraits and shows a variety of children in both studio and natural environments. All my portraiture is ‘on location’ these days and none is in the studio.  I find this brings a much more natural result as, let’s face it, children don’t usually choose to play in a studio with big lights flashing every few seconds!

Paul Wilkinson was amazingly patient with me when he produced these and we went through several versions together. Him being on the other side of the world made no difference to the levels of customer service I enjoyed, mainly because he gets up early and works late into the night to accomodate people like me!

Anyway, take a look at the videos and see what you think!  Just click here to visit the Bonjour Photography main website, and then select the link called ‘promo videos’ along the top bar.

Would be great to know what you think too!
